SUMMARY:Trewithen’s first garden apprentice travels the world by visiting iconic Cornish gardens
DESCRIPTION:The Cornwall Garden Society’s (CGS) January lectures will be delivered by Millie Wykes. Millie was Trewithen’s first ever garden apprentice but she has recently moved on… to become a full-time employee at this historic Cornish estate! \nTrewithen features a Georgian manor house\, remarkable gardens and organic parkland\, and its restoration is ongoing. \nMillie began her horticultural journey propagating house plants at home during lockdown. Since then\, her obsession for plants and gardening hasn’t stopped growing. \nWhile working in Trewithen’s Tea Shed\, Millie hit upon the idea of undertaking her Year 10 work experience placement in Trewithen’s garden department. This then progressed to working in the gardens during school holidays. \nIn 2023\, Millie became Trewithen’s first ever garden apprentice and won three trophies at the CGS Spring Flower Show in the Novice classes\, several gold awards together with more silverware at the Falmouth Spring Flower Show and helped team Trewithen to win a further eight trophies. \nDuring 2024\, Millie utilised the Pat & Margaret Wells Bursary that she had been awarded via the CGS to travel the length and breadth of Cornwall\, visiting some of the most iconic gardens in the world. \nWe eagerly await her lectures to find out what she discovered! \nA World Tour of Cornish Gardens will be Millie’s subject on Tuesday 14th January at 7.30pm at The Alverton\, Truro TR1 1ZQ and on Wednesday 15th January at 2.30pm at Penventon Park Hotel\, Redruth TR15 1TE. \nThese lectures are free for CGS members. Non-members are welcome to attend to find out more about the Society and donations are gratefully received. \nThe Cornwall Garden Society is a charity that exists to encourage and improve the science\, art and practice of horticulture in all its branches; share knowledge about good gardening principles and Cornwall’s rich garden heritage\, and promote\, conserve\, protect and study the natural environment\, historic gardens and designed landscapes in Cornwall.
