SUMMARY:Exhibition: Tide by Tide
DESCRIPTION:Artist: Martina Heintke\nVenue: Salthouse Gallery\nDates: 18th – 24th April 2026\nLocation: St Ives\, Cornwall\, United Kingdom \nThe Salthouse Gallery is pleased to present Tide by Tide\, a photographic exhibition by Martina Heintke\, featuring images of naturally occurring sand patterns formed by the daily retreat of the tide. \nCaptured through a sustained\, ritualized return to the shoreline\, the photographs document ephemeral formations shaped by water and time. These delicate lines and textures – etched briefly into sand – exist only for a few hours before being erased by the sea and reformed anew. The work foregrounds subtlety over spectacle\, offering a contemplative alternative to conventional representations of coastal shores. \nRather than focusing on dramatic seascapes\, Tide by Tide turns attention to the aftermath of motion: the quiet moment when the water has gone and the shore holds its breath. The images reveal a visual language that feels at once abstract and deeply natural\, echoing themes of impermanence\, repetition\, and presence. \nThe exhibition invites viewers to slow down and engage with forms that are typically unseen or disregarded. In doing so\, it reflects on broader questions of time\, care\, and the quiet beauty of processes that unfold beyond human intention. \nTide by Tide will be on view at The Salthouse Gallery from Saturday\, 18th April 2026 for one week. An opening reception will be held on at 6 pm on the 18th of April.

Millie was Trewithen’s first ever garden apprentice but she has recently moved on… to become a full-time employee at this historic Cornish estate! \nTrewithen features a Georgian manor house\, remarkable gardens and organic parkland\, and its restoration is ongoing. \nMillie began her horticultural journey propagating house plants at home during lockdown. Since then\, her obsession for plants and gardening hasn’t stopped growing. \nWhile working in Trewithen’s Tea Shed\, Millie hit upon the idea of undertaking her Year 10 work experience placement in Trewithen’s garden department. SUMMARY:Tregothnan teaman to tell tales of teas and trees at CGS October lectures
DESCRIPTION:The Cornwall Garden Society’s (CGS) Autumn Lecture Programme will be launched by Jonathon Jones OBE who is Managing Director\, Trading of the historic Tregothnan Estate at Tresillian near Truro. \nEight miles from the coast and with the deep sea creek of the Fal Estuary running through it\, Tregothnan is the largest\, private botanical garden in Cornwall and has been nurturing and protecting rare species within its warm and humid micro-climate for 700 years. \nPioneering the introduction of the Camellia into Great Britain more than two centuries ago\, Tregothnan is now home to the Royal Horticultural Society’s National Collections® of Camellia reticulata and Camellia sasanqua. \nIn the mid-1990s\, Tregothnan’s gardeners suspected that because of the success of ornamental Camellia\, the tea variety – Camellia sinensis – might also grow successfully within the estate’s unique environment. Much research was undertaken including trips to tea regions in India and Japan to understand more about the processes and pitfalls of growing and harvesting the precious leaves\, and in 1999\, the very first British tea bushes were planted there. \nWith 29 miles of tea planted in 25 years\, Tregothnan’s thriving plantation has become the largest tea garden in Europe and its award-winning luxury brand – the most British tea in history – can be enjoyed across the globe. Even in China\, Jonathon is known as ‘the Teaman’! \nAwarded an OBE for services to international trade and commerce in 2020\, Jonathon’s journey began in Cornwall when he was awarded The Ken Thomas travelling scholarship in 1993\, which enabled him to visit Japan. He eventually returned home to take up the role of Head Gardener at Tregothnan at the age of 25\, completed a Nuffield Scholarship on the subject of tea growing\, and is now highly regarded as a pioneer\, speaker\, Country Life columnist and champion for business and export. \nIn this latter context\, Jonathon believes that there are huge opportunities to do better business whilst benefitting the environment. \nHaving scoured the market for an easy to use ‘phone app to map Tregothnan’s rare collection of trees and shrubs\, he decided to create his own – Tremap – to map every tree on earth to help amateurs\, academics\, private gardeners and professionals care for trees and manage green spaces. \nLaunched in 2021 and supported by the Smithsonian Institute in the USA as well as the space industry\, Cornish hotels and gardens\, and farmers in New England and New Zealand\, Tremap promotes the UK’s pre-eminence in environmental innovation from its HQ in Nanpean\, and this global database has already mapped a staggering 15\,419\,265 trees across the world. \nTrees and Teas will be Jonathon’s subject on Tuesday October 8th at 7.30pm at The Alverton in Truro – immediately following the CGS AGM at 7pm – and on Wednesday 9th October at 2.30pm at Penventon Park Hotel in Redruth. \nThese lectures are free for CGS members. Non-members are welcome to attend to find out more about the Society and donations are gratefully received. \nThe Cornwall Garden Society is a charity that exists to encourage and improve the science\, art and practice of horticulture in all its branches; share knowledge about good gardening principles and Cornwall’s rich garden heritage\, and promote\, conserve\, protect and study the natural environment\, historic gardens and designed landscapes in Cornwall. SUMMARY:Award-winning podcast comes to Fowey
DESCRIPTION:The award-winning ‘For the Many’ podcast will provide the grand finale for this year’s Fowey Festival of Arts and Literature on Saturday 18 May. \nPolitical broadcaster\, Iain Dale\, and former Labour Home Secretary\, Jacqui Smith\, will be joined by special guest Conservative MP and Veterans Minister\, Jonny Mercer\, in a live show that promises plenty of political insight\, analysis and humour. \nThe podcast began in 2018 and now consists of more than 430 episodes. Venue appearances have included a five-day run at the Edinburgh Fringe last August and three recent party conferences. \n“We are thrilled to be ending this year’s festival with such a highly acclaimed show\,” said Brenda Daly\, Festival Director. \n“It promises to be a hilarious evening of dissecting whatever political stories are making the headlines in a fun\, gossipy but well-informed way. Audience questions will also be taken.” \nThe event runs from 8pm to 10pm and early bird booking is now open. Tickets cost £20 each\, with discounts available for Friends of Fowey Festival. \nThe festival has become an annual highlight of the Fowey calendar. Now in its 26th year\, the eclectic mix of art\, literature and music begins on 10 May and preparations for another stellar programme are well underway. \n“We will be announcing our 2024 line-up in mid-March\,” said Lynn Goold\, Festival Trustee and Chair. \n“Our short story competition\, aimed at those aged 16 years and over\, has again been launched. This year’s title is ‘Beaches’. Entries should be no more than 1500 words and the submission deadline is 28 March. \n“Successful authors are a staple part of our festival programme\, and this competition is our way of encouraging successful writers of the future.” \nEach entry costs £10 and there is a first prize of £200\, with a second prize of £100. \nTo make a ‘For the Many Live’ early bird booking\, visit here.
