SUMMARY:RAINBOW FLAG
DESCRIPTION:Rainbow Flag is a temporary neon installation by artist Peter Freeman\, commissioned by Newlyn Art Galllery & The Exchange to celebrate LGBTQIA+ History Month. Situated in the Studio Café at Newlyn Art Gallery\, the form of the flag echoes the shape of the large picture window and the neon light fills the space with vibrant colour. \nPeter Freeman is interested in the beauty and emotional quality of artificial light. His light sculptures and installations are poetic solutions using electric light and digital technologies to transform architectural spaces and create uplifting luminous forms that celebrate light and bring pleasure to the senses.

SUMMARY:HIPPO CAMPUS: WHERE WE LEARN
DESCRIPTION:An Arts Council Collection National Partner Exhibition. \nHippo Campus: Where We Learn\nA group exhibition featuring works from the Arts Council Collection that explores alternative schooling\, peer-to-peer learning and self-education. \nIn recent years there has been increasing concern about the downgrading of arts subjects in primary\, secondary and higher education. With the rise in fees\, closure of courses and loss of studio space across UK art colleges\, artists and their peers are increasingly initiating alternative models of education for themselves. Hippo Campus explores how we learn\, where we learn\, and who we learn from. \nFeaturing more than 20 artists\, Hippo Campus includes photographic images of schools and colleges around the world as traditional places of learning\, such as Birmingham students by Vanley Burke and top-hatted pupils at Eton by Tony Ray-Jones. Devices for learning\, memory aids\, and the fallibility of memory are illustrated by works by Emma Kay and Mariele Neudecker. Mind maps and learning through popular culture are presented in works by Jeremy Deller and Andy Holden. The exhibition takes its title from Bedwyr Williams’ piece of the same name; Hippocampus being the part of the brain that enables memory and learning. \nThroughout the exhibition there will be small forum areas with seating\, shelves of books and monitors\, areas that expand on themes within the show. The launch of Hippo Campus will be the start of a conversation with\, and between\, visitors to share their own knowledge and skills. A programme of talks\, workshops\, social groups and alternative curriculums for all ages will run throughout the exhibition. \nNewlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange is an Arts Council Collection National Partner. The Arts Council Collection is managed by Southbank Centre\, London on behalf of Arts Council England. \nFind out more about the Arts Council Collection National Partners Programme \n10-5\, £3.30 entry

SUMMARY:ALBERT REUSS AT TRURO CATHEDRAL
DESCRIPTION:09 JAN — 07 FEB 2020 \nWe are presenting an exhibition of paintings by Albert Reuss at Truro Cathedral to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 Jan. \nAlbert Reuss was a Jewish painter and sculptor born in Vienna who came to England in 1938 following Hitler’s annexation of Austria. Reuss lost many members of his family as well as his possessions and the reputation he had built up as an artist. He continued to work in England but his style changed dramatically reflecting the trauma he had suffered. He held numerous exhibitions in municipal galleries throughout England and in 1948 he moved with his wife Rosa to Mousehole\, Cornwall. \nOn Reuss’s death\, a collection of paintings were acquired by Newlyn Art Gallery’s as part of a small public collection.  A selection of these paintings form the core of this exhibition. The exhibition will be an integral part of a wider programme of events and displays at Truro Cathedral. \nHolocaust Memorial Day is the day for everyone to remember the millions of people murdered in the Holocaust\, under Nazi Persecution\, and in the genocides which followed in Cambodia\, Rwanda\, Bosnia\, and Darfur. Holocaust Memorial Day 2020 marks 75 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and the theme for HMD 2020 reflects on how people have stood together in order to stop division and the spread of hatred in our society. \nHOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY EVENT \nMON 27 JAN\nTruro Cathedral Chapter House \n18:15: A public opening of the event\n19:30 to 20:30: John Halkes\, former Director of Newlyn Art Gallery in conversation with Susan Soyinka\, Reuss’s biographer\, about Reuss’s life and work.\nFree.  No booking required. \nFind out more about HMD

SUMMARY:Dele Sosimi & Afrobeat Orchestra LIVE
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 12th October 7:30pm & Sunday 13th October 1pm \nThe Eco Park is proud and superbly excited to welcome back the legend: Dele Sosimi\, the UK's multiple award-winning Afrobeat Ambassador who has been consistently flying the Afrobeat flag in the UK since 1995\, for not one\, but two performances across the weekend on Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th October. \nFor the first time ever\, Mount Pleasant Eco Park are hosting two live performances. The first is a late-night party with all the usual Eco Park vibes\, top DJs and vegetarian meals. Followed by a family friendly performance on Sunday afternoon. \nTim Stirrup\, the Eco Park director said “It’s rare for such great Afrobeat performers to make their way to Cornwall\, so we didn’t want anyone to miss out. A lot of our customers can’t make the evening gigs as they have young families.” \nDele began his career when he joined Fela’ Anikulapo-Kuti’s Egypt 80\, where he played keyboards for 7 years and toured extensively around the world. Fela Anikulapo-Kuti was the founder of the style of Afrobeat. The music is a blend of complex but highly danceable funk grooves\, Nigerian traditional music (including hi-life)\, African percussion\, underpinning the jazz horns and solos from other instruments\, as well as rhythmical singing. \nTim added “We hope to inspire the next generation of musicians by giving them the opportunity to see some of the best musicians in the country right now. Dele's Orchestra comes with a full horn section and kids will be blown away by the powerful performance. But let's not forget\, the parents will get to see a top band who they may not have had a chance to catch due to family commitments” \nDele’s pulsating live shows demonstrate his vision of Afrobeat - one that is faithful to the original blueprint\, but also clearly bears Dele’s own DNA\, expanding the horizons of the genre. A true pioneer\, he is accompanied on stage by a 6-piece band\, serving up an unforgettable mix of grooves over a 2 hour long set that will ignite the beginning of winter in style! \nSupport comes from top Afrobeat DJs on both the Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. Be quick to get your tickets as this will sell out. Cabana Cafe will be open over the weekend serving a delicious pre-gig meal with Vegan and Vegetarian dishes being served up. \nAdvance tickets for both gigs are available online now on the website or by calling the Eco Park office on 01209 891500\, Tuesday – Friday during office hours. Doors open from 7:30pm on Saturday 12th and 1pm on Sunday 13th. Cabana Café will be open\, serving a delicious Vegan/Vegetarian Supper on the night.
