SUMMARY:Miracle Theatre’s Aladdin
DESCRIPTION:Following its past sell out productions\, Miracle is delighted to be back at Princess Pavilion\, Falmouth with a new & not to be missed Christmas show suitable for all\, Aladdin. \nEvery Christmas for the last fifty years the Willoughby-Brown family have gathered at their country seat in Cornwall to eat\, drink\, laugh and bicker and\, with the help of their loyal staff\, to provide their own entertainment in the form of a home-made pantomime. \nThe few guests who have been permitted to witness these rare soirées have spoken of being swept away by eccentric singing\, exotic dancing\, breath-taking magical effects and of being frequently moved to tears of laughter. \nThis year\, as an act of seasonal charity\, the family has decided to embrace the epithet of ‘great art for everyone’. Stopping short of actually allowing the general public to soil the carpets of their splendid house\, they have offered to install themselves on the stage of the Princess Pavilion\, where they invite you to assemble and share their unique interpretation of the oriental fairy-tale Aladdin. \nPeople & friends of Cornwall… brace yourselves for all the fun of traditional panto and a whole lot more! \n7 December – 5 January | Princess Pavilion\, Falmouth TR11 4AR

SUMMARY:Lecture Series: Rural Idyll to Post Industrial landscape in 200 years – how our industrial revolution changed the face of Cornwall
DESCRIPTION:Rural Idyll to Post Industrial landscape in 200 years – how our industrial revolution changed the face of Cornwall\nby Archaeologist and Trustee of the RIC Nick Johnson \nThe talk will explore how the landscape of Cornwall has been changed by industrialisation\, tourism\, war and government over the last 200 years.  In 1800 over half of Cornwall was a land of moors\, downland and dunes with the remainder being medieval derived settlements and farms along the valleys. The mining and quarrying revolution of the late 18th and early 19th century resulted in huge areas being given over to mining activity\, miner’s smallholdings\, great Parks and Gardens of the ‘mineral lords’ and new industrial housing and industrial enterprises. As mining declined at the end of the century so tourism increased and coastal areas absorbed ever greater landscapes associated with leisure. The two World Wars and post War state intervention in the countryside have also left their mark. The landscape of Cornwall that we experience today is very different from that which Captain Poldark would recognise about the time that the RIC was founded. \nBook Tickets Now  \n£ 4 Members \, £7  Non-Members \, FREE for 14-18 yr olds and concessions for low income families\nPriority seating available

SUMMARY:Urban axe throwing
DESCRIPTION:Urban axe throwing has finally made its way to Cornwall. Axe heads has teamed up with Mount Pleasant Eco Park\, Porthtowan to host the first ever Urban Axe throwing event in Cornwall. So What is Urban Axe Throwing? \nIt’s basically hurling axes at a wooden target inside the Eco Park’s timber framed barn. You will become addicted to achieving that perfect throw and hearing that satisfying ‘thump’ when you land your first axe in the target. There is two axe throwing lanes with two people throwing at the same time. Each 1.5 hours session begins with a safety briefing\, then the practice begins! You will learn one handed throwing techniques and may even get to master the two handed throwing technique! The afternoon includes challenges and games and at the end\, a final tournament to crown the Axe Heads Champion! \nIt’s just £20 per session and the Eco Park Barn Bar will be open (no drinking during the sessions for obvious reasons!) First session is at 12pm\, second session is at 2pm on Sunday 4th November. \nThis is not your average afternoon and is guaranteed good fun! This is hopefully the beginning of regular axe throwing sessions and maybe even Cornwall’s own axe throwing league! Come and be part of something truly unique. \nFor more information and tickets visit www.mpecopark.co.uk

SUMMARY:John Blight: Artist\, Archaeologist and Writer
DESCRIPTION:£5 \nFilm and discussion about John Blight:  Artist\, Archaeologist and Writer by Selina Bates and Keith Spurgen \nJohn Blight\, the eldest son of a school teacher\, grew up in Penzance and by his early 20s had made a name for himself as an accomplished artist and chronicler of the land he loved so well. He sketched\, painted and engraved the ancient crosses of Cornwall\, its churches\, sites of antiquity and natural phenomena. His work was endorsed by the Prince Regent and attracted the attention of Robert Stephen Hawker and James Halliwell-Phillipps\, literary celebrities of their day. At Blight’s suggestion the Royal Institution of Cornwall began to collect works of art for a scrap-book of Cornish subjects. He was also a luminary of the Penzance Antiquarian and Natural History Society. \nWhen Halliwell-Phillipps engaged Blight to record the sites of Stratford connected with Shakespeare\, the young artist’s fame (and perhaps fortune)\, seemed assured. \nFrom this time on\, however\, his luck began to change. He became depressed by having to take long journeys\, working hard and long hours for very little financial reward. The life of a gentleman eluded him and he seemed never to be able to settle down and earn a steady wage. The result was a breakdown; ill health and the fixation that he was married to Evelina Pidwell. Aged 35 he was taken to St. Lawrence’s Asylum\, Bodmin\, where he was to remain for 40 years — the rest of his life. \nWas this a life lost? — as Blight himself once called it. Selina Bates and Keith Spurgin\, following clues left by Peter Poole and Charles Thomas\, have unearthed some of the fascinating details of how a C19th asylum was run. Much of what Blight recorded seems to challenge our view of how inmates lived and were cared for. In addition\, the very end of his story brings a realisation so unexpected as to rival the denouement of a Victorian novel.  \nFriday 2nd November 6.00pm - 7.30 pm \nTickets £5
