Since then\, her obsession for plants and gardening hasn’t stopped growing. \nWhile working in Trewithen’s Tea Shed\, Millie hit upon the idea of undertaking her Year 10 work experience placement in Trewithen’s garden department. SUMMARY:Tregothnan teaman to tell tales of teas and trees at CGS October lectures
DESCRIPTION:The Cornwall Garden Society’s (CGS) Autumn Lecture Programme will be launched by Jonathon Jones OBE who is Managing Director\, Trading of the historic Tregothnan Estate at Tresillian near Truro. \nEight miles from the coast and with the deep sea creek of the Fal Estuary running through it\, Tregothnan is the largest\, private botanical garden in Cornwall and has been nurturing and protecting rare species within its warm and humid micro-climate for 700 years. \nPioneering the introduction of the Camellia into Great Britain more than two centuries ago\, Tregothnan is now home to the Royal Horticultural Society’s National Collections® of Camellia reticulata and Camellia sasanqua. \nIn the mid-1990s\, Tregothnan’s gardeners suspected that because of the success of ornamental Camellia\, the tea variety – Camellia sinensis – might also grow successfully within the estate’s unique environment. Much research was undertaken including trips to tea regions in India and Japan to understand more about the processes and pitfalls of growing and harvesting the precious leaves\, and in 1999\, the very first British tea bushes were planted there. \nWith 29 miles of tea planted in 25 years\, Tregothnan’s thriving plantation has become the largest tea garden in Europe and its award-winning luxury brand – the most British tea in history – can be enjoyed across the globe. Even in China\, Jonathon is known as ‘the Teaman’! \nAwarded an OBE for services to international trade and commerce in 2020\, Jonathon’s journey began in Cornwall when he was awarded The Ken Thomas travelling scholarship in 1993\, which enabled him to visit Japan. He eventually returned home to take up the role of Head Gardener at Tregothnan at the age of 25\, completed a Nuffield Scholarship on the subject of tea growing\, and is now highly regarded as a pioneer\, speaker\, Country Life columnist and champion for business and export. \nIn this latter context\, Jonathon believes that there are huge opportunities to do better business whilst benefitting the environment. \nHaving scoured the market for an easy to use ‘phone app to map Tregothnan’s rare collection of trees and shrubs\, he decided to create his own – Tremap – to map every tree on earth to help amateurs\, academics\, private gardeners and professionals care for trees and manage green spaces. \nLaunched in 2021 and supported by the Smithsonian Institute in the USA as well as the space industry\, Cornish hotels and gardens\, and farmers in New England and New Zealand\, Tremap promotes the UK’s pre-eminence in environmental innovation from its HQ in Nanpean\, and this global database has already mapped a staggering 15\,419\,265 trees across the world. \nTrees and Teas will be Jonathon’s subject on Tuesday October 8th at 7.30pm at The Alverton in Truro – immediately following the CGS AGM at 7pm – and on Wednesday 9th October at 2.30pm at Penventon Park Hotel in Redruth. \nThese lectures are free for CGS members. Non-members are welcome to attend to find out more about the Society and donations are gratefully received. \nThe Cornwall Garden Society is a charity that exists to encourage and improve the science\, art and practice of horticulture in all its branches; share knowledge about good gardening principles and Cornwall’s rich garden heritage\, and promote\, conserve\, protect and study the natural environment\, historic gardens and designed landscapes in Cornwall. SUMMARY:The Gods Descend Upon Truro Arts Company\, in ‘FOUR THIRTY A.M.’ a Solo Exhibition by Christian Boult
DESCRIPTION:Truro Arts Company will present a solo exhibition by Newquay Open University Student Christian Boult. The exhibition entitled ‘FOUR THIRTY A.M.’\, will be shown inside the main space of the art shop on River Street\, from Monday 6th to Friday 10th May 2024. The collection\, which marks the culmination of degree study\, is presented in large scale\, oil painted canvases. \n‘FOUR THIRTY A.M.’ showcases classical deities from the ancient world and is a re-working of sculpture from that same era and the Baroque. Painted in glazed oil\, over detailed underdrawings\, these works represent immutability and the infinite\, cast inhuman form. Presented in a style of classical realism these deities showcase form and detail\, concentrating on composition and nuance. \nThe deities are a representation of an aesthetic and an idea\, the focus of which are still very reverberant in contemporary society. Christian remarks that “I am attempting to portray the idea of something beyond time\, the very essence of which reverberates in our recognition of human form and a connection to the infinite”. The works catalyse our perceptions of what mortality means and open a reflective window to the perpetual. \nThe title itself represents a regular painting time that was undertaken in the production of these works. For most OU students\, study inevitably means some form of sacrifice\, and for the artist this was the unrelenting time spent in front of his easel at 4:30am before work each day for a year. \nThis exhibition marks the end of a long journey for the artist who has previously exhibited in Buckinghamshire and Lincolnshire and\, whilst working full time\, has been studying with the Open College of the Arts (now part of the Open University) for the last 10 years. \n‘FOUR THIRTY A.M.’ is kindly hosted by the Team of Truro Arts Company\, 26 River Street\, Truro\, TR1 2SJ from 6th to 10th May. \nPrints of the works will also be on display at Truro Library\, Union Place from 22nd April to 10th May 2024\, by kind permission of the Library Team. \nMore information can be found here. \n

SUMMARY:Secret Gardens of Cornwall revealed in December lectures
DESCRIPTION:The Cornwall Garden Society’s (CGS) December lectures will be presented by Tim Hubbard\, who has revealed 20 stunning yet lesser-known Cornish gardens in his new book\, Secret Gardens of Cornwall. \nTim is a former award-winning BBC presenter and journalist who has lived and gardened in Cornwall for more than 40 years. He now interviews at literary festivals around the country\, guides private garden tours and writes books as well as for newspapers and magazines including BBC Countryfile and Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) publication\, The Garden. With his architect husband\, Tim is creating a new clifftop garden facing the Atlantic Ocean and is quickly learning to love any plant that can survive saltwater spray and storm force winds! \nDescribed by Alan Titchmarsh as “a glorious celebration of the finest gardens in a county whose climate makes them especially breathtaking” and illustrated with sumptuous photography by Rob and Jo Whitworth\, Secret Gardens of Cornwall recounts the stories of the owners and Head Gardeners who have made the most of Cornwall’s unique climate to create very special gardens\, which we are all now able to enjoy. \nAs well as celebrating the Duchy’s horticultural past and the diverse plant species that thrive within our sub-tropical corner of the UK\, the book also features local horticulturists who are pushing the boundaries of design and cultivation today. \nTim will share his experiences and anecdotes about the people he encountered during the writing of Secret Gardens of Cornwall at 7.30pm on Tuesday 5th December at The Alverton in Truro and 2.30pm on Wednesday 6th December at the Penventon Park Hotel in Redruth. \nSigned copies of Secret Gardens of Cornwall will be available to purchase at both events. \nThese lectures are free for CGS members. Non-members are welcome to attend to find out more about the Society and donations are gratefully received. \nThe CGS is a charity that exists to encourage and improve the science\, art and practice of horticulture in all its branches; share knowledge about gardening and Cornwall’s rich garden heritage\, and conserve the county’s natural environment. The Society is affiliated to the RHS and has enjoyed the patronage of HRH The former Prince of Wales. \nFor further information about the CGS\, please visit cornwallgardensociety.org.uk\, follow @CwllGardenSoc on X and @CornwallGardenSociety on Instagram\, or like www.facebook.com/cornwallgardensociety
