Mike lives in St. Ervan and has made the culture of Cornwall very much his own. He has done extensive research into early Cornish music and was central to the discovery and publication of the manuscripts of John Giddy and John Old. In 2002 he was made a Bard of the Gorsedh of Cornwall for services to Cornish music. \nWith musical friends he now brings this music to life in a hugely entertaining illustrated talk. \nThis lively programme takes us from about 1737 to 1850 through the medium of manuscripts found in Cornwall. \n£7. DESCRIPTION:The Alverton Hotel in Truro and The Greenbank Hotel in Falmouth have teamed up to offer a series of summer events that celebrate the best of Cornish food and drink. \nOn selected days throughout the summer the two hotels will offer customers the chance to meet the chefs\, watch food being carefully prepared and cooked\, and indulge in six courses of Cornish cuisine with an accompanying drinks flight. \nThe sister hotels combine city and coast and these influences have shaped the menu by showcasing speciality dishes from each hotel. The menu features only Cornish food and drink from the very best local suppliers\, including Camel Valley Vineyard\, Matthews Stevens\, Duchy Game\, Curds & Croust\, Stevenson Newlyn\, L George Butchers and Tregothnan tea. \nThe first event takes place on Thursday 26th July at The Greenbank and is held at The Alverton two weeks later on Thursday 9th August. DESCRIPTION:Falmouth Week is back and this year The Greenbank Hotel and its popular pub The Working Boat will be celebrating on their private quay. All events are free\, and all are welcome. \nWith enviable views over the harbour to watch the yachts racing\, their events marquee will be open throughout the week whilst providing a hub for sailing activities. Head there from Friday 10th through to Sunday 19th August\, from midday – 11pm every day. \nThe Greenbank’s chefs will be cooking up a storm on the barbeque\, including homemade pizzas fresh from their new outdoor pizza oven. There will also be an afternoon tea party and live music on most evenings\, including performances by Femmes de la Mer\, All Good Things\, Patrick Gilbert\, The Oggymen\, plus so much more. \nFRIDAY 10TH AUGUST \nHead over for the launch party! Expect live music starting at 6pm with a variety of musicians performing in the events marquee\, including Lucky Guy and The Chancers\, throughout the evening. \nSATURDAY 11TH AUGUST \nEnjoy live music from Alfie Pound and Bryher’s Boys to get you dancing throughout the evening\, starting at 6pm. The Greenbank will also host the first ever Falmouth Gin Festival. \nSUNDAY 12TH AUGUST \nBlues singer and pianist Patrick Gilbert will perform in the afternoon – a real treat! The Working Boat’s famous roasts will be served throughout the day and their pub quiz will be held as usual at 7.30pm. \nTUESDAY 14TH AUGUST \nThe Greenbank’s Afternoon Tea Garden Party will be held in the marquee with a summer-fete set up between midday and 6pm. Expect delicious homemade cakes and scones\, with G&Ts and Prosecco to celebrate in style. The cocktail bar will be in full swing\, followed by the spectacular Red Arrows at 6:15pm swooshing over Falmouth. \nTHURSDAY 16TH AUGUST \nLocal sea shanty group The Oggymen will be providing entertainment from 6pm onwards. \nFRIDAY 17TH AUGUST \nThe marquee will host live music from a variety of musicians\, including All Good Things from 6pm onwards\, for the spectacular fireworks party across Falmouth harbour. \nSATURDAY 18TH AUGUST \nStart the day off with a leisurely brunch in the pub\, and don’t miss the female sea shanty group Femmes de la Mer in the marquee from 8pm until 10pm. \nSUNDAY 19TH AUGUST \nFalmouth Week closing party\, with Patrick Gilbert performing in the afternoon. DESCRIPTION:Tickets: £4 Members\, £7 Non-Members      \nCornish mining and the Brunels’ Thames Tunnel – inspirational legacies to modern tunnelling \nProfessor Lord Robert Mair CBE FREng FICE FRS. President\, Institution of Civil Engineers \nThe lecture will describe the important work of Robert Vazie and Richard Trevithick\, pioneering 19th century Cornish engineers\, and their outstanding contributions to tunnelling technology. Their work had a major influence on Sir Marc Brunel’s invention of a moveable shield for tunnelling through soft ground\, and the heroic construction of the Thames Tunnel (1825 – 1843)\, the first civil engineering project on which his son I K Brunel worked. The lecture will describe the construction of the Thames Tunnel\, and the seminal influence this has had on modern tunnelling. It will also describe the latest tunnelling technology applied in the recent Crossrail project in London\, with 21 kilometres of sub-surface twin bore tunnels and 8 new sub-surface stations\, focusing on the importance of geology and recent innovations. \n__________________________________________________________________________________ \nProfessor Lord Robert Mair is President of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He is Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of Research at the University of Cambridge. He is a founding director of the Geotechnical Consulting Group based in London. Prior to his appointment at Cambridge\, he worked in industry for 27 years\, specialising in geotechnical engineering. He leads a research group collaborating closely with industry\, focusing on the geotechnics of underground construction and innovative field monitoring techniques\, and is Head of the Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction at Cambridge. He is also an active consultant on civil\, geotechnical and tunnelling projects worldwide. He is Chairman of the Science Advisory Council of the Department of Transport. In 2015 he was appointed a crossbench peer in the House of Lords\, where he is a member of the Select Committee on Science and Technology.
