SUMMARY:Lecture at the Royal Cornwall Museum: 6th July 2018
DESCRIPTION:Tickets: £4 Members\, £7 Non-Members      \nCornish mining and the Brunels’ Thames Tunnel – inspirational legacies to modern tunnelling \nProfessor Lord Robert Mair CBE FREng FICE FRS. President\, Institution of Civil Engineers \nThe lecture will describe the important work of Robert Vazie and Richard Trevithick\, pioneering 19th century Cornish engineers\, and their outstanding contributions to tunnelling technology. Their work had a major influence on Sir Marc Brunel’s invention of a moveable shield for tunnelling through soft ground\, and the heroic construction of the Thames Tunnel (1825 – 1843)\, the first civil engineering project on which his son I K Brunel worked. The lecture will describe the construction of the Thames Tunnel\, and the seminal influence this has had on modern tunnelling. It will also describe the latest tunnelling technology applied in the recent Crossrail project in London\, with 21 kilometres of sub-surface twin bore tunnels and 8 new sub-surface stations\, focusing on the importance of geology and recent innovations. \n__________________________________________________________________________________ \nProfessor Lord Robert Mair is President of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He is Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of Research at the University of Cambridge. He is a founding director of the Geotechnical Consulting Group based in London. Prior to his appointment at Cambridge\, he worked in industry for 27 years\, specialising in geotechnical engineering. He leads a research group collaborating closely with industry\, focusing on the geotechnics of underground construction and innovative field monitoring techniques\, and is Head of the Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction at Cambridge. He is also an active consultant on civil\, geotechnical and tunnelling projects worldwide. He is Chairman of the Science Advisory Council of the Department of Transport. In 2015 he was appointed a crossbench peer in the House of Lords\, where he is a member of the Select Committee on Science and Technology.

SUMMARY:Wreckers Border Morris
DESCRIPTION:Wreckers are a lively Morris Side\, from the Tamar River Valley\, the river that separates Cornwall from England!  We dance in tattered Black and Gold Coats\, the colours of the ancient kings of Cornwall.  Our style of Morris Dancing originally comes from the borders of England and Wales\, mostly danced to traditional folk tunes.  Although traditional on the whole\, the dances that we perform certainly include an element of evolution. \nOur form of dance is centred on street entertainment\, we love to engage with people in our audience\, and inform people of the history of our dances as well as encouraging them to join in one or two.  Fun and joy comes first\, closely followed by accuracy and unison of the dancers. \nIn most of our dances we clash large wooden sticks and are quite boisterous which sets us apart from other styles of Morris traditions\, where elegance\, grace\, compliance to the recorded dance steps and greater accuracy can be observed. \nFree with admission

SUMMARY:Miracle Theatre ‘The Cherry Orchard’
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, Miracle unpacks Chekhov’s bittersweet comedy about a once-wealthy family\, whose idleness and extravagance have brought them to the brink of bankruptcy.\nObstinate and self-absorbed\, they are deaf to the rumblings of change which surrounds them\, and unable to accept help when they need it.  \nWill it take a revolution to destroy their cosy world of privilege and entitlement – or will their own stupidity be enough? \nBill Scott’s new adaptation treads a tragicomic tightrope\, bringing out all the humour and pathos of Chekhov’s masterpiece which\, more than a century after it was written is as popular as ever. \nAudiences of all ages can enjoy the full ‘open air theatre experience’\, by bringing along cushions and blankets along with a well-stocked picnic or sample the delicious food and drinks provided onsite. Prepare for all weathers and arrive early for a special night of theatre performed under the stars! \nTicket prices | Adult £14 | Concession £12 | Under 16 £8 | Family £40\n01872 262466  www.miracletheatre.co.uk
