SUMMARY:The Gods Descend Upon Truro Arts Company\, in ‘FOUR THIRTY A.M.’ a Solo Exhibition by Christian Boult
DESCRIPTION:Truro Arts Company will present a solo exhibition by Newquay Open University Student Christian Boult. The exhibition entitled ‘FOUR THIRTY A.M.’\, will be shown inside the main space of the art shop on River Street\, from Monday 6th to Friday 10th May 2024. The collection\, which marks the culmination of degree study\, is presented in large scale\, oil painted canvases. \n‘FOUR THIRTY A.M.’ showcases classical deities from the ancient world and is a re-working of sculpture from that same era and the Baroque. Painted in glazed oil\, over detailed underdrawings\, these works represent immutability and the infinite\, cast inhuman form. Presented in a style of classical realism these deities showcase form and detail\, concentrating on composition and nuance. \nThe deities are a representation of an aesthetic and an idea\, the focus of which are still very reverberant in contemporary society. Christian remarks that “I am attempting to portray the idea of something beyond time\, the very essence of which reverberates in our recognition of human form and a connection to the infinite”. The works catalyse our perceptions of what mortality means and open a reflective window to the perpetual. \nThe title itself represents a regular painting time that was undertaken in the production of these works. For most OU students\, study inevitably means some form of sacrifice\, and for the artist this was the unrelenting time spent in front of his easel at 4:30am before work each day for a year. \nThis exhibition marks the end of a long journey for the artist who has previously exhibited in Buckinghamshire and Lincolnshire and\, whilst working full time\, has been studying with the Open College of the Arts (now part of the Open University) for the last 10 years. \n‘FOUR THIRTY A.M.’ is kindly hosted by the Team of Truro Arts Company\, 26 River Street\, Truro\, TR1 2SJ from 6th to 10th May. \nPrints of the works will also be on display at Truro Library\, Union Place from 22nd April to 10th May 2024\, by kind permission of the Library Team. \nMore information can be found here. \n

SUMMARY:Secret Gardens of Cornwall revealed in December lectures
DESCRIPTION:The Cornwall Garden Society’s (CGS) December lectures will be presented by Tim Hubbard\, who has revealed 20 stunning yet lesser-known Cornish gardens in his new book\, Secret Gardens of Cornwall. \nTim is a former award-winning BBC presenter and journalist who has lived and gardened in Cornwall for more than 40 years. He now interviews at literary festivals around the country\, guides private garden tours and writes books as well as for newspapers and magazines including BBC Countryfile and Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) publication\, The Garden. With his architect husband\, Tim is creating a new clifftop garden facing the Atlantic Ocean and is quickly learning to love any plant that can survive saltwater spray and storm force winds! \nDescribed by Alan Titchmarsh as “a glorious celebration of the finest gardens in a county whose climate makes them especially breathtaking” and illustrated with sumptuous photography by Rob and Jo Whitworth\, Secret Gardens of Cornwall recounts the stories of the owners and Head Gardeners who have made the most of Cornwall’s unique climate to create very special gardens\, which we are all now able to enjoy. \nAs well as celebrating the Duchy’s horticultural past and the diverse plant species that thrive within our sub-tropical corner of the UK\, the book also features local horticulturists who are pushing the boundaries of design and cultivation today. \nTim will share his experiences and anecdotes about the people he encountered during the writing of Secret Gardens of Cornwall at 7.30pm on Tuesday 5th December at The Alverton in Truro and 2.30pm on Wednesday 6th December at the Penventon Park Hotel in Redruth. \nSigned copies of Secret Gardens of Cornwall will be available to purchase at both events. \nThese lectures are free for CGS members. Non-members are welcome to attend to find out more about the Society and donations are gratefully received. \nThe CGS is a charity that exists to encourage and improve the science\, art and practice of horticulture in all its branches; share knowledge about gardening and Cornwall’s rich garden heritage\, and conserve the county’s natural environment. The Society is affiliated to the RHS and has enjoyed the patronage of HRH The former Prince of Wales. \nFor further information about the CGS\, please visit cornwallgardensociety.org.uk\, follow @CwllGardenSoc on X and @CornwallGardenSociety on Instagram\, or like www.facebook.com/cornwallgardensociety
