SUMMARY:Care Takers
DESCRIPTION:A new series of work by Hannah Waldron\, an artist working predominantly with weaving\, from her studio at Potager\, near Constantine. \n“Care Takers is a body of work that has been produced slowly over the course of a year whilst I have been taking care of my new baby daughter. The act of care-taking became at the forefront of everything for me this year\, yet when looking at the numerous acts of care taking place in society and nature\, they are so often overlooked and fade into the background of what is valued. I wanted to use this opportunity to bring my attention to and celebrate acts of taking care within my environment; from nature based observations in the garden at my studio\, to unseen ways in which care taking and nourishing interaction occurs in nature\, for example underground mycelium networks\, through to the process of handweaving itself. \nThese new series of weavings have been produced on a small handloom\, using yarn dyed with natural dyes including woad\, madder and weld\, and embroidered at intervals on long walks around Falmouth whilst my daughter was sleeping.” \nHannah Waldron – Jan 2022 \nAll works are for sale.

SUMMARY:Simple Truths
DESCRIPTION:Simple Truths is part of Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange’s New Voices Programme\, which gives a platform to members of the community not often heard\, through the curation of works selected from the Arts Council Collection. \nThe artworks for Simple Truths have been chosen by dads from the WILD Young Parents Project\, who the gallery has been working with since March 2021\, from their allotment in Pengegon\, Camborne. \nWith each visit to the allotment the dads were asked to select an artwork from the Arts Council Collection catalogues\, which were kept in the allotment shed. Marking their choices with a Post-it note and a line about why they’d chosen it\, an interesting collection of works has steadily formed. Choices reflect how the dads were feeling in that moment or spoke of a past experience or of future ambitions. Over a brew from a ghillie kettle\, conversation flowed\, exploring their choices and often providing the starting point for personal reflections around mental health or what was happening in their lives in that moment. \nSimple Truths includes paintings\, photographs\, and sculptures by:\nDavid Batchelor / Maeve Brennan / Shezad Dawood / Seamus Nicolson / Richard Patterson / Liv Preston / Bob Robinson / Caroline Walker / Bedwyr Williams \nAn Arts Council Collection National Partners Programme Exhibition\, curated by dads from the WILD Young Parents Project. \nNewlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange is an Arts Council Collection National Partner. SUMMARY:Christmas in Redruth
DESCRIPTION:“CHRISTMAS is not cancelled.” That is the message from Redruth town who are promising the community\, although it won’t be like previous years\, there’s still plenty of festive cheer on offer. \nRedruth usually plays host to crowds of revellers who come for the town’s Christmas procession\, markets\, entertainment and light switch on\, but this year’s restrictions has put pay to the town’s traditional plans. \nLara McShee\, Community Project Manager said: “For obvious reasons we can’t have the parade this year and sadly grottos are still dividing opinions.  Instead we’re turning our focus on lots of small reasons to still choose Redruth as a place to visit this December. \n“We’ve taken all the favourite elements of our events at Christmas and spaced them out throughout the month\, giving people a reason to come back week on week.” \nThe success of the towns monthly Saturday Market has meant that the stallholders will be back every week in December offering the best of local Cornish produce\, Christmas trees\, crafts\, gifts and festive foods.  The stalls can be found dotted throughout the historic market town which has recently received more than three million pounds in funding to improve and restore its high street. \nThe beautifully decorated Market Strand and Market Way will be festooned with fairy lights and will have a splendid Christmas Tree at its centre.  The venue will also welcome more stalls among its independent shops\, that lead through to the Buttermarket - mecca for local artisans. \nThe town is also still forging ahead with some of its traditions such as ‘merry and bright’ window displays – this year’s theme is ‘Lights’ and on Market Saturday’s wandering street performers and art installations have been planned (all adhering to social distancing guidelines). \nLara continued: “It’s more important than ever that we support our high street and traders.  Our town is lucky to have a fantastic cinema\, great eateries and stores who will all be providing gift vouchers and goods so why not pop in and support local.” \nThe markets take place on November 28th\, December 5th\, 12th and 19th. \nTo keep up to date with all the latest plans follow the town’s Facebook page @redruthtown

SUMMARY:GRAYSON PERRY: THE VANITY OF SMALL DIFFERENCES
DESCRIPTION:03 OCT 2020 — 02 JAN 2021 \nTHE EXCHANGE \nAn Arts Council Collection National Partners Programme Exhibition \nThe Vanity of Small Differences is a series of six large-scale tapestries by the Turner-Prize winning artist Grayson Perry. \nInspired by William Hogarth’s A Rake’s Progress the tapestries\, each measuring 2m x 4m\, chart the ‘class journey’ made by young Tim Rakewell and include many of the characters\, incidents and objects Perry encountered on journeys through Sunderland\, Tunbridge Wells\, and The Cotswolds for the television series All in the Best Possible Taste with Grayson Perry. The television programmes were first aired on Channel 4 in June 2012. In the series Perry goes on ‘a safari amongst the taste tribes of Britain’\, to gather inspiration for his artwork\, literally weaving the characters he meets into a narrative\, with an attention to the minutiae of contemporary taste every bit as acute as that in Hogarth’s 18th century paintings. \nNewlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange is an Arts Council Collection National Partner. The Arts Council Collection is managed by Southbank Centre\, London on behalf of Arts Council England. \nFind out more about the Arts Council Collection National Partners Programme \nArts Council Collection\, Southbank Centre\, London and British Council. Gift of the artist and Victoria Miro Gallery with the support of Channel 4 Television\, the Art Fund and Sfumato Foundation with additional support from Alix Partners.

SUMMARY:EXTRAORDINARY POSTCARDS FOR EXTRAORDINARY TIMES
DESCRIPTION:19 SEP 2020 — 02 JAN 2021 \nNEWLYN ART GALLERY \nCELEBRATING  CREATIVITY IN EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES \nAt the height of the covid-19 pandemic we invited people of any age and at any location\, to document their life during lockdown on postcards. We asked them to use any medium that would work on an A5 postcard to share some of their experience of this extraordinary time. They might be inspired by new routines or talents discovered\, objects in their home that have become all too familiar\, or whatever it is that they were looking forward to when the lockdown restrictions were relaxed. This exhibition celebrates creativity in exceptional circumstances. \nLocal groups including St Petroc’s homeless charity\, Whole Again Communities\, schools and residential homes\, WILD young parents\, Cornwall Library borrowers\, the Intercom Trust and Shallal have contributed to the project. We have also had submissions from far flung places: from all over Cornwall\, the UK\, Europe to the Far East and the United States. \nArtists have also been responding to these times\, creating posters and billboards for public sites across the UK. We have brought together many of the most pertinent for a display facing out from the gallery garden.

SUMMARY:RAINBOW FLAG
DESCRIPTION:8 Aug-12 Sep \nNewlyn Art Gallery \nRainbow Flag is a neon light installation by artist Peter Freeman\, originally commissioned by Newlyn Art Galllery & The Exchange to celebrate LGBTQIA+ History Month. Situated in the Studio Café at Newlyn Art Gallery\, the form of the flag echoes the shape of the large picture window and the neon light fills the space with vibrant colour. \nPeter Freeman is interested in the beauty and emotional quality of artificial light. His light sculptures and installations are poetic solutions using electric light and digital technologies to transform architectural spaces and create uplifting luminous forms that celebrate light and bring pleasure to the senses. \nWe’re delighted that our Rainbow Flag took on a new meaning during the pandemic\, and will stay up for longer than planned.
