Secret Gardens of Cornwall revealed in December lectures

5th December 2023 - 6th December 2023

The Cornwall Garden Society’s (CGS) December lectures will be presented by Tim Hubbard, who has revealed 20 stunning yet lesser-known Cornish gardens in his new book, Secret Gardens of Cornwall.

Tim is a former award-winning BBC presenter and journalist who has lived and gardened in Cornwall for more than 40 years. He now interviews at literary festivals around the country, guides private garden tours and writes books as well as for newspapers and magazines including BBC Countryfile and Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) publication, The Garden. With his architect husband, Tim is creating a new clifftop garden facing the Atlantic Ocean and is quickly learning to love any plant that can survive saltwater spray and storm force winds!

Described by Alan Titchmarsh as “a glorious celebration of the finest gardens in a county whose climate makes them especially breathtaking” and illustrated with sumptuous photography by Rob and Jo Whitworth, Secret Gardens of Cornwall recounts the stories of the owners and Head Gardeners who have made the most of Cornwall’s unique climate to create very special gardens, which we are all now able to enjoy.

As well as celebrating the Duchy’s horticultural past and the diverse plant species that thrive within our sub-tropical corner of the UK, the book also features local horticulturists who are pushing the boundaries of design and cultivation today.

Tim will share his experiences and anecdotes about the people he encountered during the writing of Secret Gardens of Cornwall at 7.30pm on Tuesday 5th December at The Alverton in Truro and 2.30pm on Wednesday 6th December at the Penventon Park Hotel in Redruth.

Signed copies of Secret Gardens of Cornwall will be available to purchase at both events.

These lectures are free for CGS members. Non-members are welcome to attend to find out more about the Society and donations are gratefully received.

The CGS is a charity that exists to encourage and improve the science, art and practice of horticulture in all its branches; share knowledge about gardening and Cornwall’s rich garden heritage, and conserve the county’s natural environment. The Society is affiliated to the RHS and has enjoyed the patronage of HRH The former Prince of Wales.
