Bodmin Jail

Enjoying this historic landmark as a local

Oozing history, Bodmin Jail has played several important roles in the past, including the safe keeping of state papers and the Domesday Book during the First World War.

An iconic Cornish landmark, the jail provides the perfect day out for all ages - as a local, why not keep up to date on the latest news, offers and goings on by following them on Facebook and Twitter?

Exploring the jail

Explore the cells that once held many lonely prisoners, doomed to endless days filled with hard labour and cold – with only a small amount of light filtering through from their barred windows, for comfort.

Take a tour around the jail to experience the sights, sounds and smells of this building that was once home to so many, and visit the only working execution pit in the country where you can learn about those condemned to the ‘Long Drop’.

With an extensive plan in place to restore this historic Cornish landmark, all revenue made from entrance fees and the business as a whole is reinvested in order to breath new life into the jail. A museum of Cornish penal life over the last three centuries is also in the pipeline.

If you’re looking for things to do during the weekend or school holidays to keep the kids entertained, Bodmin Jail is well worth a visit.

Ghost Walks

With the UK’s most haunted venue right on your doorstep, if you’re looking for a fright you’ll love exploring the jail after dark.

Run by the resident medium, you will be taught the basics in Reiki and energy management before embarking on the night’s activities.

As a new inmate you’ll have time to acclimatise over a 3-course meal whilst getting to know those joining you for the night. Starting at 8.45pm, you will finally be released from the horrors within at 5am!

There are many great events taking place at Bodmin Jail throughout the year.

The celebrations can then continue into the evening within the impressive Governor’s Hall. Guests also have the option to explore the jail with free entry during the day.
