Vault Beach

Vault is a long, sweeping expanse of fine sand and shingle, near Gorran Haven. Waters are characteristically calm, shallow, and ideal for swimming, and on sunny days the sea is illuminated in a brilliant Mediterranean-turquoise. It is clear to see why Richard Curtis chose Vault as the beach setting for his film, About Time; far enough away from any town or roads that it feels deliciously peaceful and secluded. The far end of the beach nestles beneath the towering cliffs that flank Dodman Point, providing shelter from westerly winds and a hotspot for wildlife.

Popular with walkers, Vault makes for a stunning picnic spot and the perfect place to take a break from a day of exploring the South West Coast Path. The beach is accessed by a ten-minute descent down the grassy hill from the National Trust carpark at Lamledra. Alternatively, Gorran Haven is half an hours stroll along the footpath to the east, and there is a large carpark and plenty of facilities, including loos, in the town.

Vault is dog friendly all year round but is not guarded by lifeguards, so please take extra care when entering the water. Due to its remote nature, the far end of the beach is unofficially recognised as a nudist beach.
