Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange

Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange

The tiny fishing village of Newlyn gave its name to a colony of artists who, drawn by the sea air, beautiful landscapes and perfect light of Cornwall, came here to live and work.

Newlyn Art Gallery was opened in 1895 to display the work of the artists and is still one of the county’s leading contemporary art galleries, majoring in drawing and painting.

In 2007 the Victorian facilities were upgraded and a second venue – The Exchange – was opened a couple of miles away in Penzance. It was built in a former telephone exchange and still retains an industrial feel to the interior. Inside is the biggest gallery space in the region where large-scale work can be displayed. It is also the venue for community events, live performance and film; making it a popular place to visit in Cornwall.
