A market town that is steeped in history

Nestled on the side of a large hill and surrounded by rolling countryside, Launceston is steeped in history. Heavily featured in literary classic, Jamaica Inn, it was once the ancient capital of Cornwall.

The town’s skyline is dominated by a Norman motte-and-bailey castle with its unusual tower keep. Launceston is still a traditional market town, boasting a busy shopping centre and a variety of attractions including walking, cycling, surfing, arts and crafts. It was also the home of the nationally celebrated poet, Cornish Bard and teacher at a local primary school, Charles Causley CBE.

We love...

Medieval Prior’s Bridge, also known as Packhorse Bridge or St Thomas’ Bridge. Its design of five brick arches sit low in the waters of the Kensey River.

Don't miss...

Kitt Hill, the highest point in the Tamar Valley. The views are stunning – Dartmoor, Bodmin Moor, Plymouth and Eddystone Lighthouse.
