Mousehole

Cornwall’s picture-postcard harbour village

Declared by writer Dylan Thomas to be ‘the loveliest village in England’, it’s not hard to see why Mousehole (pronounced Mowzul) is a sought after get-away-from-it-all destination.

Spot seals on St Clement’s Isle just off the mainland in Spring, make a date with the sandy beach and aquamarine seas in the summer. In Autumn, enjoy bracing coastal walks in the mild climate and in the winter witness Mousehole puting on her Christmas glad rags in the form of the famous Christmas lights.

A range of high quality eateries gather around the harbour – from catch-of-the-day fish and chips to foraged bistro food with a view.

With records tracing a fishing port here back as far as 1266 and part of the South Quay dating back to 1390 there’s a rich history here too. Hunt down the Keigwin Arms on Grenfell Street to learn the story of the night Mousehole was burned to the ground by the Spanish Armada.

We love...

A wander around the maze of streets and alleyways to find authentic artists’ studios and galleries, especially during May’s Open Studios event.

Don't miss...

Some stunning scenery on a good yomp along the South West Coast Path from Mousehole to nearby artist haven, Lamorna Cove.
