St Breward

Heart of the Moor

St Breward is at the heart of Bodmin Moor and has a history which goes back centuries, despite the challenges posed by living at one of the highest points in Cornwall, some 700ft above sea level.

The parish is flanked by the peaks of Roughtor and Brown Willy and the land hereabouts was used for quarrying, clay extraction and farming - there is still grazing on the moorland today. There were settlements here in pre-historic times and there is still evidence of stone circles, burial chambers and ancient field systems.

St Breward has a kind of rugged beauty which has been universally recognised. It is an Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty, an Area of Great Landscape Value and a Site of Special Scientific Interest as well as being the focus of several Conservation Area designations. In the village you can see the highest church in Cornwall and visit one of the oldest pubs, the 11th century Old Inn.
